You also might check that the hardware clock is reasonably close to the system time. If you reboot and the hardware clock is way off then ntp will not be able to bring it back and give up. I've had that happen. So do a hwclock --systohc once in a while to update the hardware clock.

Re: Sacrificial Linux boxes

Sorry, not being clear again. By a sacrificial box, I mean a box that if the kernel or a driver explodes and crashes the box nothing important is lost. Also, since the kernel may crash while testing, hardware that is somewhat resilient to destruction due to system crashes that require cold reboots would be desirable. I run the 2.6 kernel also and find it to be plenty stable. I only meant that since the book I'm reading is specific to 2.6 driver develpoment I want to build a box on which to develop and want to build one that can I can sacrifice the files on and can take the punishment of frequent crashing, hence "sacrificial". On-Call Tech needed

I need to have the services of an on-call technician available for about six weeks in April and May. This person should be familiar with Windows XP, Linux Samba servers/firewalls, Hylafax, and Cyrus, and preferably have experience with Gentoo. Should have good experience with hardware troubleshooting and repair, able to scratch-build a system quickly if necessary. You will need to be available on-site in the Westport area with reasonable notice (~1hr.) from approximately 8-5, Monday-Friday to provide services like emergency hardware resets and repair, recovery from kernel panics or driver errors, occasional PEBKAC, etc. You may occasionally be called on Weekends if there is a server outage. Weekend coverage is at your convenience, but you will be expected to make reasonable efforts to have the system on-line by Monday morning. You will not be expected to be available 24x7. The systems are reasonably reliable and stable; this position is a fall-back to cover the remote monitoring and management of the site. You may not be called at all, and it will be unlikely that we will require more than two hours per week of on-site service.

It's awfully quiet out there. Is the list still up? Am I still subscribed? Well, let's find out. Is anyone running a sacrificial Linux box for testing such things as kernel patches, contributions or drivers? I'm going to set one up for a 2.6 debian box, so I can follow along with this book on Linux device drivers. So I'm looking for some ideas for what to load into this box on a hardware level and ask anyone if they have a particular device that needs to be written for or improved on. Basement cleanout

OK, I'm having a basement clearout. I have a fair bunch of stuff to get rid of - it should (or at least did) all work. One of the P100 systems ran very nicely as a firewall for a couple of years until I upgraded it (to a P200 (!)). I'd rather someone came and took all of it rather than try to get rid of it piecemeal - also that way you have a fair quantity of spare parts for anything that doesn't work, there should be at least a couple working systems that could be cobbled together here (note that all the P100s use the same mobo). I am under no illusion as to the monetary (lack of) value of this stuff, however if you were to want to swap it for something much smaller (like say a USB thumb drive - hint hint..) that would be great.
