As someone who only attended one meeting, due to the fact I work nights (have one in the daytime ;) ) the only hardware issue I know of, was they didn't have wireless access for the longest time (by the posts I read). Around the time I first got interested heavily in Linux, and attended the meeting, I got a second job, and started working 7 days a week. That lasted 3 years and I had 6 days off between them (and the second one still wants me back). Now I actually have next Tuesday off, and am wondering if there is going to be a meeting since it is Thanksgiving week? I still wonder what the fuss is about changing the meeting? Access (no laughing!) database programmer needed ASAP

Anyone strong on MS Access or care to recommend someone who is? Quick project, immediate payment. The project: Got a client with an Access database on their server. Multiple people log into it, use it, etc. It's all getting ported to a PHP/MySQL web app, but in the meantime I need to let users continue to use the app on a localized (i.e., on their individual machines) basis. Near as I can tell, the entirety of the task involves getting hardcoded path declarations stripped out of the database/app. Give me a ring on my cell if you're the right person or know someone who is: 816-985-1361. Hard Drive Noise

My wife's desktop is making an odd rhythmic sound that sounds like a quiet chain saw revving over and over again. It does not continue without end, but runs quite a bit. I believe it to be a disk drive making the sound, but it's hard to tell which one of the three drives in the machine is making the sound. I have installed and run the smartmon utilities and they don't indicate any hard drive failure being imminent. Any suggestions as to how I might figure out which drive is making the sound, and thus is the one headed south? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Peace, Jim

I have some folks that are interested in using Linux, but want a good migration guide. Do you have any links that you recommend for guides for newbies? I'm thinking they should start with Ubuntu, and dual boot. That allows Ubuntu to do it's migration thing. Anyone know if it will migrate Outlook mail yet? Anyway, what's your best Linux to Windows migration links? Thanks, Jim

Server Racks

In the effort to raise a bit of extra money for Christmas, I have 2 steel server racks that I am wanting to sell. I don't have the exact dimensions at the moment, but they are around 19"wide by 30"deep by 6' high. I can give exact dimensions and pictures to anyone interested. I was going to put them up on Craigslist, but figured I'd give kcluggers first shot at it. I was going to sell them for $75 each, but am willing to negotiate. Memory

Speaking of memory, I've been looking at my old box and wondering if maybe bumping the RAM up to 1G would help, or if I should upgrade the video card. Is Dual Channel DDR worth the ~$5/G premium? Anybody have a GB of PC2100,2700, or 3200 they's sell cheap? Or a 512 extremely cheap?

It's almost a cliche to say no one got fired for ordering IBM. Then again? My research to buy a laptop- budget ballpark $400-550 has raised question of a T41 or similar IBM. OF that general family the T41 seems the most common and "total ownership cost" most viable or is it? As my usage is primarily low intensity apps like simple browsing or music play with light office tasks, I really do not feel a need for exotica. Using most Linux distros- it seems that a 1.4 ghz laptop with 2gb ram will outperform the 2ghz 512mb ram. IS that overview really on track? As in it being more "big picture" functional to have 1.6 ghz P4 with 2gb ram as opposed to 2.8ghz with 256mb ram? Any personal experiences would help. TIA Oren

Databases on removable drives

Guys, There is a reason. It's not some sort of strange conspiracy or security back door. They keep the data on removable drives so that the drives can be locked in a safe when they're not in use, and they are supposed to lock said drives in said safe any time they are not actually using the data. It's that simple. Yeah, there are flaws in the plan, but that's the reason for it.
