FLOSS for Windows: TheOpenCD: It was a nice package, but the big stuff was already on the Ubuntu LiveCDs. At least as recently as the last LTS build, they were shipping with Windows installers for OOo, Firefox, and one other app (Thunderbird or GAIM?). In Edgy Eft, they were shipping with AbiWord, GAIM, Thunderbird, Firefox, and the Gimp. The other projects are promising, too, and there's something to be said for variety, but it might be more feasible to just do Ubuntu, given the relative ease of using their ShipIt system. That said, ShipIt says it takes "up to ten weeks." That doesn't reflect my past experience, but still, can we count on it getting here in time? Operating systems: Anything worth handing out over Ubuntu at the moment? Given the crowd, would a couple of copies of the x86 builds of OpenSolaris be of any interest? How about the low-end distros found on the Multi-Distro CD? ( http://www.linux.com/articles/54537 ) Misc utilities: Would there be any interest in the attendees about the Ultimate Boot CD w/INSERT Linux? ( http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ ) It's been the better part of a decade since I've attended one of these, and at the time I was too busy gawking at the booths to eyeball the rest of the crowd. With the UBCD and Ubuntu, also keep in mind that both are good ways to get Linux into the hands of someone that might have had a more immediate interest in just playing around with the FLOSS Windows software and OS-agnostic utilities. -Sean Crago

IP Packet Analysis

Some of you may see this as spam and if you do, I hope that you will forgive the offense. I am a long time member of this list and thought some on the list may be interested in this information. On Wednesday evening, December 5, I will be teaching the SANS Stay Sharp IP Packet Analysis course at the Dykes Library at the KU Med Center in Kansas City. The course starts out with an in depth look at IP and TCP packet headers, explaining what each of the header fields are and how to make sense of the values therein. Sure there are wonderful tools that can do this for you, but this course will give you an understanding of how those tools do what they do. The second part of the course looks at a handful of those tools that are invaluable for incident response and troubleshooting network connection and networked application problems. We'll also have a gentle review of hexadecimal and binary numbering systems and how to convert between them and decimal; fun stuff that's good to know if you're serious about networking, incident response, reverse engineering, etc. The course comes with a book full of detailed instruction, copies of the slides, a helpful pocket reference and a CD containing various open source packet analysis tools. I want you to know that I'm not a SANS employee. I'm a practicing security professional and have studied the IP Packet Analysis course materials myself and have found them to be very good. Even after 15 years of this stuff, I learn new things all the time. I can tell you from experience that the certificate exam for this material is a really good test of your knowledge of TCP/IP, that is to say, it's challenging. A Linux USB keyboard/mouse question

Maybe someone with more history in Linux than I have can answer this question: Do most Linux distributions boot up and immediately recognize a USB keboard/mouse? (That is, they work automatically without the need for any special boot parameters/options.) Or does this vary from distribution to distribution, something that you have to figure out case by case? Hardware request - CPU heatsink/fan

I'm piecing together an AMD system from odds and ends. I just got a Duron 1.4Ghz chip when I swapped in a Thoroughbred Athlon XP 2100+ in my dads machine. I have a somewhat broken Azza KT133XT mobo that might work with the Duron at 266DDR FSB (as the manual hits at being possible for "future processsors"); it is missing a heatsink clip nub. It's missing the center one on the non-overhang side (ie opposite from the side that has "Socket 462" imprinted on it). Thus, I am looking for a late generation Duron spec'd heatsink that clips on to the larger two (outer) clip nubs. Or, a mobo&heatsink/fan to use that is capable of 266DDR FSB. I could trade something or pay a little bit for a heatsink from a LUGer to save a bit of hassel before I go digging through the bins at Comp. Swap&Shop or Surplus Exchange.. Best to ask here first!
