KCLUG CSS

To clarify, This is not a standards war. This is not about KCLUG website re-design. This is about seeing what you can do with CSS Design. I merely chose KCLUG website as an exercise option. Feel free to use CSS Garden instead. Often KCLUG members (those in the boonies) do not get to see what their counterparts are doing in the field. This is an opportunity to show your stuff, to share, etc. I am curious and waiting with anticipation to see what CSS designs come out of the exercise. It is a design exercise for fun. ah, yes and #11. Your CSS should be posted on the list under Creative Commons License

Good morning KCLUGers, In the course of daily employment you hope every now and then you get one of those really cool projects that challenge everything you know. One of those were dropped in my lap, and the first thing I did was appeal to the KCLUGers IRC channel for direction. One of our forum members (djgoku) suggested the web site http://www.csszengarden.com/ to help in my learning curve. What a great site for inspiration. This got me thinking this KCLUG website. I hopped over to KCLUG and "viewed" source and the CSS behind it. I understand it was quite a bit of work to get the layout correct so it would display correctly in many browsers. I would like to propose a friendly unofficial "challenge" of sort, but more of an "opportunity" for the members to strut your CSS stuff. Beginner or Old sages alike, let's see what you can do. Here are the rules: 1. Content remains the same. Content being what you can visually see when visiting the main page. 2. You must retain somewhere in some form the KCLUG penguin and the banner. 3. You may use other graphics as overlays, etc. so long as it is original artwork. You retain all the copyright to any additional graphic or artwork you decide to include, with the understanding that if your design is used in the future by vote or administrative declaration KCLUG is allowed to use it free of royalties. 4. A design list needs to be added to showcase other people's designs (similar to what css garden has done). 5. Self promotion can only be done "hidden" within the code itself. No frontal display. 6. The design is limited to the front page (however with css you are designing a "look and feel" website layout. isn't this what CSS is for :-)) 7. It must pass W3 standards and WaSP standards as well. 8. Your CSS is posted to the list under the Subject "KCLUG CSS Design - (Subject)". 9. You understand your CSS may not see the light of day outside of the list. 10. Have fun. So, head over to CSS Garden, check it out and give it a whirl. Who knows, someone might spot your CSS and decide you are perfect for that CSS development job in the tropics or mediterranean and fly you all over the world spreading CSS goodness. Dale Beams

By the way, when I said it wasn't possible, I meant scratch-building your own out of components, not selecting features from a manufacturer, which obviously IS possible.

ITEC Registration Deadline?

Does anyone know the deadline for registering as a normal ITEC attendee? The ITEC website doesn't say there is one, but it does say that all registration applications will be evaluated, which implys a final point past which no registrations will be accepted. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? dynamic nohup?

Is anyone aware of a utility that uses ptrace to attach to a process specified by PID, installs a signal handler for HUP that ignores it, and then untraces the subject process? -- Although efforts are under way to mitigate the problem, this message may contain flippancy, hyperbole and/or confusing assertions. File System Corruption

I ran into a problem where a file system was corrupted beyond repair and wondered if anyone has seen anything like this before or has a reasonable explanation. Here is the scenario: Linux was running on an Intel X64 system with two local drives mirrored in Linux containing the swap file system. The system was booting off a SAN drive where the rest of Linux was loaded. There were three other SAN LUN's being used that were: 1. 500 GB 2. 150 GB 3. 35 GB (Linux LUN.) We swapped the system hardware to a different box and changed the HBA to be on the new box so the HBA Bios was still allowing the Boot from SAN. The new box had two local drives but they were mirrored at the hardware level with RAID 1 (so Linux would have only seen one drive drive.) The system was rebooted and crashed with numerous file system corruption errors. The 500 GB LUN on the SAN got severely corrupted on the reboot of Linux from the SAN with the new hardware to the point where it could not be repaired. What I am wondering is, What caused the system to get corrupted? Is it possible that the lack of a swap file system mounted would have caused this to happen? Or is it because the /dev devices were not the same as they were in the first configuration? Any ideas? Phillip Thayer

www.directron.com has the Asus customizable line and may have others. You can pick processor speed, type of optical drive, mfgr. and size of HDD, and amt. of RAM. There are base models with Intel and ones with AMD, nVidia and ATI video. I preferred the z71v when I looked a few months ago. Stock, ~$700, totally tricked out, $1500.
