Suggestions for interview questions

What type of networking questions would you suggest to weed out interview candidates during a 15 minute phone conversation? The emphasis would not be on any particular platform, but rather to discover if the candidate had a general understanding of tcpip networking, hardware, infrastructure, security, nat, firewalls, vpns, ipsec, ssl, dns, hubs, switches, routers, etc. Example: Q: Can you name a protocol responsible for dynamic IP address assignment? Somewhat OT: Top 500 list

There has been a change to the reports of the top 500 supercomputer list. They now indicate which OSes are run on the systems in the top 500. A ***whopping*** 78.2% (or 391) of all the top 500 supercomputers run a linux flavor or Linux compined with something else. Not sure what that is an indication of. A mixed Linux + ? OS? What's up with that? Oh yeah, 4 BSDs and 5 Macs. One of those MACs is *homegrown* and made the top 15, homegrown being made by the company, which looks like it may do some hush-hush work for the DOD.

Cable companies unbundling? Unbundling what? You can just get cable modem now, but they charge you more for that then for the basic cable with the cable modem, because they have to install the filters to block cable. I just had to go through rigamaroar with them as I did basic with modem, and didn't hook up the tv. Stuck with Comcast, who doesn't offer that, and since the change merger is supposed to be happening in the next 9 months, those on Time Warner, will be losing this option. Nyet, they had a meeting at my work, and it was brought up by several of them. It was "not public knowledge" yet, but they said it was widely known. I assume by the way he said it, it was just waiting on state regulator approval. Most of the Time Warner people I know weren't happy. The Comcast people came out and installed a wireless cable modem for another meeting, had all the local Comcast., Time Warner, and all the subcontractors out for a breakfast/lunch meeting. This was installed for one of these meetings, and they said it would only be on the bill for 24 hours, then gone for good (we'd never see it), yet their customer service called for a review (how did we like it) then they tried to bill us at the end of the month. MP3 support in Linux distros?

I admit I'm still using a rather old distro at home, Mandrake Official 10.0, but it came with full MP3 support (both as audio files and as the audio format in a video file). Someone on another forum lambasted my suggestion that the XviD video codec would play on any Linux machine by saying that most distros didn't come with MP3 support, making a lot of XviD videos play in Linux with no sound. I went looking and of course he's right, Debian and Ubuntu don't have it for obvious licensing reasons, Redhat pulled support for MP3 back in version 8.0 and never put it back. Mandriva still includes support for MP3s. What exactly is the official policy on MP3s?
