The learning curve for MySQL is going to be probably not much more than SQLite (I also haven't seen SQLite). Plus, if you ever need to do some powerful SQL stuff or ever want to play around with doing powerful SQL stuff, then you'll just be able to do them with MySQL. If you go with SQLite, and then you need to do some tricky types of stuff with the data, you'll probably have to port everything over to another DB. From what I understand of SQLite, that is. I hear it is sort of like MySQL in the early days. Lastly, with MySQL you'll be garaunteed to be able to speak to any important database. I just bought my wife a new laptop and recycled the old one for my daughter. I spent the first 2-3 hours on my wife's machine applying patches, updating stuff, and migrating data over. My daughter's machine took about 6 hours. On #3, depending on the hardware, you need to look at your hardware vendor's website before blindly applying all Microsoft updates. When I booted off the "recovery" disks to restore my wife's old laptop to the factory default drive image... The first site I visted was Sony support. There were a couple updates for her laptop which read "apply this if XP locks up after installing the patch for Microsoft Knowledgebook ######...". Funny how I'd never been able to install XPsp2 because her machine locked up solid during the sp2 install... There were also Sony updates I couldn't install until after I'd applied XP service packs. So you really may have to interleave hardware vendor updates and Microsoft ones. If you need storage capacity, consider going down to MicroCenter, they currently have a deal on a Western Digital 7200RPM 120GB drive for $50 after rebates. They also have a $25 external usb drive enclosure. Its cheap looking, but it works. As a bonus, it is fairly easy to pull off the USB+power component and switch over to an IDE connector. You might also want to pick up a copy of Norton Ghost. Make sure it supports XP (XP's NTFS). They had a deal on Ghost at CompuUSA a while back for $40 after rebates. We use ghost a lot at work. I've heard Ghost 9+ is really Partition Magic Drive Imager made over to look like Ghost. It can do incremental images and scheduled backups. You can traverse and selectively copy files out of an image, and you can also supposedly mount backup images as a drive letter. If there's an OSS version of Ghost that works on NTFS partitions without requiring extensive reading and tweaking, please let me know. TV Features

British Television has had a text service for a long time. This is usually linked to one of the four main channels you can get over broadcast, and is a menu of news, weather, and some advertising. The format is reminiscent of the BBS days of the '80s, all text menus, simple button press navigation. It's handy to chatch up on the news mid-day or grab a quick weather or traffic report. On Sky TV, the sattelite service in the U.K., they've used these functions to give you much more interactive TV features. The news channels allow you to go into an eight-channel multi-screen format, with a text sidebar and a ticker of your choice. Other options on the menu include some inter-active games and such, and the ability to read eMail from AOL, Yahoo, and a couple of other services (not MSN). Obviously, you need to have some sort of uplink for this to function; the Sky box uses the phone line that it makes PPV reports with, the same thing U.S. sattelite systems all have. I haven't bothered to go all the way into this - the phone line's disconnected from the box except for set-up - and I can imagine that if you wanted to reply to mail using a TV remote would be a pain, but I think it's pretty cool that they have these options. Who knows, some day the U.S. might catch up.

This could actually be good news, what with the way Cruise ships are killing off passengers with food poisoning. Hey maybe India, will have to outsource back to us to get back all the people they lose on the cruise ships. Nah, they'll just hire FSU people... oh wait they're already doing that. ;') or :'( ? I'm not sure the DoHS is going to be very thrilled about this. Those Fed types generally don't like seeing people skirt around the law. Especially with all those potential terrorists just off-shore! Commentary On Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy

Well, what you can see is the Hitchhikers movie. I've been assured from competent sources that most of the new stuff (including Arthur's love interest) are the late Douglas Adams' creations. I've seen it, and its a competent retelling of the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy mythos, plus some extras (the literal "slapstick" is also a Douglas Adams creation). The guy from Planet Magrathea wanted to see the same story again and he was rightfully disappointed, but if you think of it as a retelling rather than an attempt to tell the same story, it works rather well. My only complaints are that they overused the Vogons, and Arthur Dent acting more like an American Action Hero than a British Arthur Dent at the end of the movie. He's Arthur Dent, stuff happens to him, he doesn't happen to stuff! What we really need is a Windows dll that will replace the NTFS with ext3 then we can convert all those Windows filesystems to ext3 and never worry about NTFS support again. Also, on the patching issue. Garrett's 100% correct. I should have included that inbetween steps 2 and 3 and 3 and 4.
