It works on cycles 7,13,20 and as far as I know no one is quite sure when it ends. There are multiple points where it could end. One being in 2012. However it could also extend a lot further. I don't have my sources handy so can't be sure of all my numbers. And as far as not knowing how to deal with problems. Simply because someone hasn't had a problem and is oblivious to them doesn't mean a person is clueless about possible problems. > How about RAM usage? As far as the client is concerned, since monitoring is plug-in based, it really depends on what you want to monitor. If you just want to monitor remote services (PING, SSH, HTTP, etc.) the effect will be the same as opening a session to that service. If you want to monitor local resources you can run NRPE (the Solaris binary is about 216K), which can run as a daemon or in inetd/xinet. Additional resources will be needed for the plug-ins that perform the actual checks-- how many checks you perform, and how often is up to you.

Good luck w/ that one. Get ready to convert everything to base 16 or was it 20 or some other strage figure. I do recall it has something to do w/ the solar cycles and that it abruptly ends at some point, although there is nothing to really stop it from continuing. I may also be thinking of the Incas. I'm babbling now as I feel weird like I did last night. I think a cold is coming on. This is the worst cold season yet for me. You also might check that the hardware clock is reasonably close to the system time. If you reboot and the hardware clock is way off then ntp will not be able to bring it back and give up. I've had that happen. So do a hwclock --systohc once in a while to update the hardware clock.

Sorry, not being clear again. By a sacrificial box, I mean a box that if the kernel or a driver explodes and crashes the box nothing important is lost. Also, since the kernel may crash while testing, hardware that is somewhat resilient to destruction due to system crashes that require cold reboots would be desirable. I run the 2.6 kernel also and find it to be plenty stable. I only meant that since the book I'm reading is specific to 2.6 driver develpoment I want to build a box on which to develop and want to build one that can I can sacrifice the files on and can take the punishment of frequent crashing, hence "sacrificial". On-Call Tech needed

I need to have the services of an on-call technician available for about six weeks in April and May. This person should be familiar with Windows XP, Linux Samba servers/firewalls, Hylafax, and Cyrus, and preferably have experience with Gentoo. Should have good experience with hardware troubleshooting and repair, able to scratch-build a system quickly if necessary. You will need to be available on-site in the Westport area with reasonable notice (~1hr.) from approximately 8-5, Monday-Friday to provide services like emergency hardware resets and repair, recovery from kernel panics or driver errors, occasional PEBKAC, etc. You may occasionally be called on Weekends if there is a server outage. Weekend coverage is at your convenience, but you will be expected to make reasonable efforts to have the system on-line by Monday morning. You will not be expected to be available 24x7. The systems are reasonably reliable and stable; this position is a fall-back to cover the remote monitoring and management of the site. You may not be called at all, and it will be unlikely that we will require more than two hours per week of on-site service.
