Thoughts on a set-top box

I have a DirecTV DVR which is a pretty slow, stupid box, but is linked to their web site, and I can download what they have on offer. I've messed with mediatomb, and so far the ratio is about three hours futzing with the setup for each three minutes of music/video I want to play, to be repeated next time because the working setup inexplicably broke. I'd like to have an option to pipe an audio stream from a cental PC to various non-digital audio systems around the house. My first guess would be an FM transmitter plugged directly into the output jack of the sound card. Every FM transmitter I've tried, though, has been barely capable of transmitting to a receiver 18" away, let alone through the steel siding to the detatched garage. I could build a full-fledged MythTV box to go beside the DirecTV box - who knows, it might even replace it - but that may be overkill, and doesn't cover listening in the garage. So what do you think I should do? I could shop around for old laptops, and put one at each listening point - I can handle setting up streaming from there. I could grab two or three $150 netbooks, and use them - they'd probably burn less electricity. I could go exotic, get some microatx or PC104 hardware and build from there. What's the best solution?

My client has a small business specializing in e-commmerce software/solutions for small/medium sized businesses. They've spent last 3 years working on a ground up rewrite in OO PHP5, MySQL5, Ajax (Jquery), Smarty, etc. They have had live customers for over a year now but have not officially released the application yet. They are looking for someone to take over as the head developer basically. They need to be good with both "under the hood" type of stuff (lower level framework) as well as UI/AJAX, etc. They are looking for someone that has a deep ecommerce background primarily. Someone that has been involved in large scale products, not just projects. Someone that has drive, can work without direct supervision, can bring good ideas and vision, help manage others when need, etc. It would be a plus if they are savvy in FreeBSD (compiling kernels, lighttpd, MySQL, benchmarking, etc), but not a requirement. This is a 100% telecommute, full time job paying $60,000 per year. There are no benefits at present, but that might change in the future. My client is physically located in Boston, MA and if you lived nearby for occasional meetings, it would be a plus, but not required. You can reside anywhere in the USA. Candidates should have held full time positions for 2 or more years. No "job-hoppers" please. ncdt equivalent for ogg vorbis?

ncdt is directory tree printer that can print the length of time to listen to all the mp3's in the working directory and it's subdirectories. Is there ncdt equivalent for ogg?

More on monitors

These are all usable, I'm pretty sure, but I'm not gonna put time into testing them. One of them's currently my server monitor, I know it's OK, another was my wife's before she upgraded to a flatscreen. I'd tweak the focus on that if I were going to use it as my main monitor, but it's fine for a console. A third was my desktop, and it needs to have the gain turned up a bit, it's kind of dim. I think the fourth one is the one with the bad power switch (everything else is fine), but as I said I'm not gonna put time into finding out. Anybody who wants 'em can have 'em, if I don't hear by next week I'll take 'em to Surplus Exchange and pay the fee.

All-in-one's and Linux?

I'm getting ready to buy another desktop machine, and really like the look of the All-in-one PCs (the iMac clones) such as the Dell XPS One. Does anyone have any experience with these machines and Linux? -- Matthew G. Copple mcopple(a)kcopensource.org

Empathizing and commiserating is exactly how I used to get by with taking hundreds of dollars from drunks while working as a Table Games Dealer at the two casinos I where worked [recursively] AND _kept_ them as regular customers, some of which even _followed_ me to the second casino when I 'moved'! I was told on more than one occasion by more than one person that I was one of the few Dealers, if not the only one, they had that actually treated people like people. Of *course*, in a retail situation, I would use that very same tactic and then once the person calms down, I would then go about finding a solution adding the diversion tactic as one possible solution. @ The whole group. Please accept my apologies for allowing my "signature" to go to the discussion list. I didn't really intend to spam y'all.
