http://www.yubico.com/products/yubikey/ Anyone else interested? They're a hardware authentication token. Think RSA SecureID without having to read or type, much less expensive, and much more entropy. There's a pam module out there for auth, and the manufacturer has a google code project for the utility that you use to change their internal, private key. (They use asymmetric crypto.) I'm probably buying mine in a week, so speak up on list or off if you want one. Count on paying $22 for each. (second cost bracket, plus splitting shipping) The manufacturer believes in open source, and has intelligent support.

LVM help

First off this is my first post so I apologize ahead of time if this is the wrong place for this. Linux administration is a secondary skill so I was hoping I get some advice. We're getting ready to install a new database server into our enviornment. It's meant to replace our current database server. We have a Hitachi SAN that stores the database files. We currently have 2 databases on the server. Each database has it's own Physical Group of about 12 LUNS. The LUNs are multipathed with HDLM. The plan is to install Red Hat 4.6 on the new server and try to get it configured identically to the current production box. That way we can present the LUNs with the database information already on it. This gets around the need to restore from backups. Time is sensitive because we have a 4 hour maintainance window. We also want to split the databases so that they are on different machines. What I'm unsure of, is when I change the zoning so the new server sees the LUNs will LVM pick up the Volume Group from LUNs? I was going to try to copy the LVM configuration from the original server, but I was worried that the multipathing would be an issue since we're dropping the total number of LUNs when we split the Volume Groups. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, Ben

Router Problem

Well, now back to my original problem. I have two run of the mill routers. I have a LinkSys WRT54G router/WAP that is connected to the cable modem. My shop building is too far away (120+ft) from the Linksys to make an effective wireless connection out here, but I have ethernet running from the Linksys to the shop building. I have an old Netgear WGR614 router/WAP that I can stick on the end of the ethernet cable, and I can establish a network connection, I can get to the internet, etc. That's all cool. The problem I have is that I can't get to our shared drive (Buffalo Link Station NAS), which uses SMB, that has the bulk of our music on it. I could live without it, but it would be nice to have, and still be wireless. So, how do I configure the Netgear to "pass thru" the SMB traffic. Restating the case for keeping "User Data" on a physically separate drive or drives

I have been gently suggesting a new practice. Making it routine to keep the Non-OS data on a separate drive from the OS. Bluntly stating the two bedrock facts seems belaboring the obvious. But the percent of such default installs is trivial at best. So? I invite constructive comment on why or why NOT using a separate device for OS and user data makes any sense. The two bedrock facts being? 1: that any disaster befalling the OS device's file system has "less chance" of damaging user data. 2: Establishing that user data as detached from the OS assists many things. The list of those "many things" is non-trivial and more. Let me give the short closers *IF* we establish it as default practice that future Linux installs use a two device minimal mode we banish whole categories of data disasters. That alone is good enough for me. The icing on that being swapping an OS becomes closer to a trivial "no user data risked" operation. Addendum forced by premeditated desire to stifle the YahBut gallery is the cherry on top. In a long past time a "drive" was a truly major expense. How often are writes to the "OS" portion of an installed Linux Distro really needed?

I am trying to understand several aspects \of how Linux "works" In the pre- X mac world they had a data and resource forking to simplify the concept. In Linux there seems to be a debate over modular Vs monolithic software architectures. What I am trying to expand my understanding of seems trivial but likely is not. It centers on which architectural path causes/needs the least writes to the core areas of what we call a "distro" I admit to being more than a bit fixated in my logic on a "distro in flash" eventual goal. The precedent I am looking back to is influenced by Apple's OS in ROM approach. Or the MP3 players which load their "OS" from a partition of their pooled flash resource into the devices working RAM area. We have several folks on list who are way better coders than most folks ever meet. I am curious to hear their comments on what if any Kernel tweaks would optimise a distro for running from flash as Puppy appears to be using. I'm NOT a low level coder, I can follow along some distance when it's presented clearly. The idea I'm targeting is to get a distro in flash that does not abuse the flash media needlessly. -- Oren Beck 816.729.3645

Thanks to Jack and Christofer for the detailed info! Just to let all know, Ubuntu must have fielded a bit of flack as they posted a security update for the linux kernel, I downloaded it and that seems to have fixed the problems I was having. On a related note, I'm leaning strongly towards Oren's idea of having separate drives for OS and data as a means of preventing future problems. I want to be able to fiddle around with the OS without endangering all of my files and this sounds like a good way to go.
