The original model for Hotmail in it's pre-MS incarnation was a "Dedicated Mail Service" Mail as a sole function. The rest of the details centered on using HTML and Open Source. Two of those elements are considered not compatible with most Portal services-, A good mental exercise is asking which ones and why. The summary? It seems that naked greed drives Portal sites to black hole like ingest Mail sites. Then there is a darker side.
