It's all a matter of setting up the right source mirrors. I've found it easier to use the urpmi command line tool for automatic updates. You can get info on configuring it from the FAQs on the #mandrake IRC channel on Freenode.

Anyone out there still using Mandrake or Fedora/RH?

Mandrake is my preferred desktop right now, and I still run some old RH servers, but I haven't played with Fedora since RH decided to rip off the customers who had paid for support on releases 7-9.
