I agree with you Brian, with one exception. Enlightenment is the best looking out of the box if you like it. I don't. Never have. I never saw the what the big deal was other than the transparent windows, which they seemed to be the first at. For me, one word always described E, yuck. I'm not a big theme hound, I switch them around every once in a while and end up back at default with just a change of wallpaper. Most of the time even that is covered up and so it's not a big deal for me. I go for functionality.
To each his own, but KDE has always been fine for me on a full desktop and fluxbox or Windowmaker on a minimal machine. I even used XFCE for a while. Make it work first, then make it pretty. They can all be reconfigured to the point that their mama wouldn't recognize them, so take a chance, open up that GUI control panel and go wild.

If there was such a thing I think a Mac OSX desktop would be the best eye candy. I would like to buy a Mac Mini the 499$ just to have a mac desktop. I haven't used a mac much other then here and there but I think it has the best eye candy.

Has anyone used ratpoison enough to get comfortable with it? How long did it take?

MY problem in comfortable use of ratpoison is a desire to lick my fingers - you've seen my house etc eh ? I prefer to use bar bait as spring cleanup is easier .
Seriously though , any keyboard based alternatives to pointer devices are GOOD to have . ratpoison is on my list of ways to make a lighter foot print install for otherwise sluggish hardware . The concept appeals to me despite my not being as you asked fluent in it's daily use . The demo I saw was very impressive being run on a modded Xbox to mitigate his lack of a mouse ! Supposedly that should have NOT run on that setup but somehow it did .

I once heard, "Window Managers are for the display of xterms." I am surprised to see folks consider Englightenment as having the most eye candy as I have it in a minimalist setup. The only reason I use E is its ability to instantly reprogram key bindings to run applications or window manager functions with e16keyedit and e16menuedit (which I have a key binding for!) If ratpoison could do this, it would be my poison too!

As the original article points out, if all you're doing is managing console session, you hardly need X. Screen and a handfull of VC's will do it.
