... The inclusion of the phone call cost is that if he has to call her and walk her thru some long procedure or fix, it can get expensive quick. He probably wants a drop in solution.
I got that point. The part I don't get is how the $0.05/min keeps out competitors. It is quite easy to "rent" an 800 number to use to get quite cheap communications with people in foreign countries. He could rent the 800 number and she could call it for free. However $0.05/min ($3/hr) isn't all that expensive, and perhaps that was what he meant about keeping out the competition. Sorry ,I can't provide a link to the rent-a-800-number services. If I recall correctly, I could call Russia/Ukraine for $0.029/per minute back when I was using it. A quick google didn't turn it up. It might require some google hacking to find it again.

For calling. There is also a linux client =).
I think that the cheapest thing to do is probably find out how they do things over there with networking (I don't think is much if anything different) and just buy a linksys/netgear or compatible cable/dsl router. Just buy online and ship to her just that simple, you might need to purchase another cable with that cable/dsl router.

Dude, pay attention! We don't have an internet connection yet! That's what this is about!

I was saying for you to call her not for her to call you. But either way is a cheaper then calling over tele and just use the internet.
Where is your wife actually located? What ISP are you guys looking at? I would just look on the ISP website they should have information on what is needed and compatible hardware needed. That would be the first thing to do check site and then call if you have other questions.
Thanks,
Jonathan

We're getting pretty far off topic here - as well as pretty far away from reality - but the problem is that BT charges you the same five cents per minute for "800 numbers". If you dial a non-BT toll-free number, they charge you by the minute. (You can get around this only by getting off of BT's network.)
