Anyone have any experience networking a PowerMac running OS 8.x and a MacMini running OSX? My brother-in-law needs to connect the two, and somehow connect a PC into the network as well.
Been considering adding a fourth computer into the mix, a Linux server box, and using a shared Linux drive to share files between the computers. It would involve sharing a Linux directory as both an HFS share and a SMB share simultaneously.
However, getting the Macs networked together is the most important bit. We'd be using an Ethernet switch to connect the two Macs together. Considered a crossover cable and discarded that idea early on.
I've found some solutions but cheap and/or free is the order of the day here. The expensive solutions tend to be Ethernet and the cheap solutions tend to be weird (such as connecting the two via null modem cable).

Mac OS 8.what? It'll make a bit of a difference on what is already included to network and what apps you can run. I'm assuming the PowerMac has an ethernet port. :) It should be very simple to just plug them both into a router and have at it by enabling the File Sharing setup. Depending on the version of OS 8, DHCP might not work well. Newer versions (8.5, 8.6) should work fine. IIRC 8.0 and 8.1 might be finicky. The Mini should work great with any regular file sharing setup, ie, AppleTalk IP, Samba, FTP, etc.

The PowerMac is running OS 8.1, hence my confusion. All of the information I've been able to Google covers OS 8.5 or higher.
My brother-in-law says he might be able to find the original OS 8.1 CDs if something needs to be on the computer that isn't.
I am under the impression that there is no version of Samba for OS 8.1, or that it was unable to connect to a SMB/CIFS share.

To get Samba on a Classic OS seems to need 3rd party non-free software. However, netatalk can be run on Linux/BSD so if you can get the two Macs to talk you should be able to set something up on the Linux server to get files through it. Macs can do AppleTalk as either LocalTalk (serial ports) or EtherTalk (ethernet) and also AppleTalk IP. You'll need to set the 8.1machine up for AppleTalk over ethernet.

Found this wonderful site which covers Macintosh Networking from OS 6 to OS X. I'd say this is the most comprehensive site I've ever seen on Macintosh Networking. It covers Mac To Mac, PC to Mac, sharing files, sharing printers, sharing Internet connections, the works.

A quick look at the start page and it looks promising. One thing I just remembered, as I am working on installing Ubuntu PPC on an old 7600/132, is that on the OS X machine you must go to the Network CP, the AppleTalk tab, and make sure AppleTlak is checked 'active'. I couldn't see any shares though Chooser on either machine until I did so. Now it works fine using the iMac to accdess the 7600. The 7600 can not access the share on the iMac. It always gets a "connection was reset" error.
7600/132 OS 7.6 2GB, 144MB iMac 350 OS X.2.8, 10GB 256MB
