I'm about to get a new one. Not an iPhone -- I have better things to do with $600. I am, however, looking to replace my Audiovox XV-6600 and its Windows Mobile with something Linux compatible.
I almost went with the Treo two years ago, when I bought this one, but kept hearing of problems with hearing the caller on the other end. Having used a phone for the last two years that requires near-complete silence to be able to use effectively, I am fully paranoid about the matter now.
Are there any suggestions for PDAPhones which are compatible with Linux (for syncing contacts, appointments, etc.) and at the very least, provide minimally acceptable call quality (that is, at least comparable to one of the low-end "free" phones)? My wife has one of those freebies, and it rocks compared to the tinny crap I try to listen to when I use my phone.

It may be a good idea to invest in a Bluetooth capable phone and headset/earpiece. That way you can get an accessory that you like the audio quality of, and use it with any BT phone you happen to have at the time.

Hello All,
This evening my wife wanted to know if she could watch Passions from the NBC.com site. (If I can't get this to work she'll start in again with the "Get a real computer" campaign. ;-] )
I currently run Linspire 5, to keep her slightly happier than a non-Windows Lemming oriented distribution would. I have their Mozilla Suite, Firefox 2.0.0.4, and Opera 9.10 installed. None of them will play any video at NBC.com. If it helps, Mozilla says that I have "libjavaplugin_oji.so Java(TM) Plug-in 1.5.0_04" installed for Java.
Is it possible to view NBC.com videos using Linux? Could I be missing a plug-in?
Personally, I could care less about this, but the wife insists on knowing.
Any help appreciated,
Bob Kennedy

If it comes down to it and nothing else seems to work, you might try using IE4Lin to run an IE version on your Linspire machine. I have some troubles with certain Flash sites on Firefox even on OS X. Safari runs that particular site my kids use, but I don't know if the Windows version of Safari runs in WINE yet...

Is this going to come down to an "Active-X" deal?
You should explain to her that NBC has chosen to intentionally corrupt all of their video files because they do not care about her or any other viewer being able to watch them. When she fully realises NBC's hubris, surely she will no longer wish to grant them the privelage of her audience. Perhaps she should get a real TV show to watch. :-)

I am able to see nbc.com videos with no problem. I am using Kubuntu with Automatix to install all the proprietary codecs and players.
As info, Jim

Bob, Did you get any error messages when you tried to view the site or episodes? It is probably the Flash 9 player you need. Yep, confirmed. Blech, that show sucks. /me wipes off the cooties.
Go here: http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayerlinux or http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflash
The site is slow too. You can also check to see if your distro supplies the Flash Player. Ubuntu does.
Brian
PS Now watch as several complain that the player is not free.

FWIW, I usually just go to a site that wants you to install the Flash plugin for Firefox, such as Google Video. It typically works fine. If you go to many other sites it's a toss up if you'll get a plugin requester or be sent tot he Adobe download page. In almost all of the distros (certain LiveCDs excepted, though some work) I can get the Flash plugin downloaded and working in FF.

They work great in Mandriva 2007.1.
While Linspire is supposed to be Windows-user friendly, you might find that a more "advanced" distro is actually more capable and attractive. A lot of us really feel the end user experience is superior to Windows, and the minor adjustments are well worth the trouble.

I'm waiting for the final version as well. On a related note, I'm new to the area and need to switch cell phone carriers. Are all the competitors here about equal in terms of coverage, or are there any I should avoid?

Ars Technica has a short article on the developers release of phone, including the news that FIC is going to be pushing out 3 other devices based on the Neo1973 in the next year. As the article says, perhaps FIC has seen the sense in an open source solution. Lets just hope they can play nice with everyone else and not throw their toys out of the sandbox if someone miff's them.
