Because I have decided not to attend KCLUG meetings due to the impracticality of locating the library (let alone parking near it), and because others in #kclug expressed some interest, I propose we consider splitting KCLUG into subdivisions. KCLUG as a whole would continue to share a single set of mailing lists, IRC channels, etc, but meetings and real-world events may be divided into regions.
A few guys seemed interested in an Overland Park subdivision/region (which would meet in O.P.)-- anyone interested in also starting a Northland subdivision?

Northland as in where or how far north?

Dunno, I haven't lived here long, but I was under the impression that "Northland" was a specific named region of KC... In particular, it would include Parkville and Riverside...

Northland is anything North of the River. I live in KCMO but I am north of the river (Waterwork Park). My office is in North Kansas City.

Parkville, Riverside, Gladstone, Liberty, and sometimes North Kansas City is my understanding.

Run it like a Meetup.com. Organize it. Announce it. See who comes.
No need to reach any kind of group-wide agreement. Just do it.

Downtown is largely empty on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, and parking is extremely easy to find (and free after 6 p.m.). There is a parking garage right next to the library and with an hour of free parking for library patrons. Just take the ticket stub to the checkout desk and they will validate it. No sweat.
Wouldn't it then be an OPLUG?
KCLUG meetings should be in KC... I supposes we could rename it GKCALUG, for Greater Kansas City Area Linux User Group... But, still... That's a bit much.
Would be nice if someone setup a webcam and did a virtual meeting too. Or had the meeting taped for local access TV. For those people who can't make the meetings.

"Penguin's World! Penguin's World! Herring time! Excellent!"
Of course, there was that other originally public access TV show, Mystery Penguin Theater 3000.

especially with ILUG (independence) and WLUG (westport) already in existence... lets see who-all uses the Combined Greater KC Geek Calendar resource at http://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=fiq2ks06f43b4c11sg0ferfen4%40group.... ... nobody.

That calendar is incorrect as well. It shows KCLUG meeting on Thursdays.

Wait, there's an ILUG? I've lived in Indep. for 5 years, and Lee's Summit for a very long time before that. I never heard of it before. Huh.
Jon.
Instead of fragmenting the KCLUG, perhaps it would be better to start new LUGs in Overland Park and the Northland area.

How about if you guys offer to host a KCLUG meeting somewhere in your area? Splitting a marginally functional group into smaller fragments is not likely to make it more effective.

Starting new LUGs would truly be fragmenting KCLUG. Setting up subdivisions keeps the group as a whole together (MLs, IRC, etc) while having meetings closer to home for some of us.
