I wrote the bylaws for the biker group I pack with. I could use my experience there to take input from the LUG. Then generate a charter and code of conduct for the LUG However, that may be a bit extreme, as I don't foresee the LUG members prone to tossing tables and stomping some dude for talking trash about his 'nix machine. As for electing officials, I we get some one to volunteer and do an election by email. Candidates can nominate themselves via the newsletter. On a determined week all who receive the newsletter can vote by email. the volunteer takes tally and informs the group who won by the email.. Validation can be done by an independent reviewer, the process would to have another volunteer, examine the tally and have each voting member send their vote to him as well.

Xandros on IBM T42 laptop- Initial report is it actually "just works"

2 parts- overview and hardware notes- then Xandros 3.0 and T42 details of the software side. Do note that so far there have been near ZERO issues of the T42 not being seamlessly compatible with Xandros 3.0 I was VERY pleased with last night's initial "test install" of Xandros 3.0 Though it's an older distro version with ethical "Non-Free" liability for some it just plain works for me. I made no attempt to dual boot both for lack of drive space on the drive and the lack of NTFS stability reputed to exist even after updating. The initial cautious default became a 12 GB drive that cost me $5. Do also note that the T42 has a "one screw" primary drive tray. Which made swapping drives trivial The drive trays are under $20 delivered from online sources as of today- 3-17-2008 So the out of pocket to do this "properly" would be still under $30 had I bought the tray. My fix was taping an old hotel room keycard over the drive's pcb as insurance. Yes- ESD potential is always a concern with such expedients. Though some brands of Door Cards are actually ESD safe by design! So far I am just paying back my debt to Linux by reporting hardware issues often snipped by others. The Linux and more directly-Xandrox 3.0 details are next. The initial procedure I use for these tests is Damn Small Linux as a CFdisk tool for formatting. That being actually quicker than my previous arguments with Xandros 3.0 over NTFS not being supported. So beginning from a formatted as FAT32 drive the install was almost literally "fill in the blanks" for keyboard-time zone- name etc. Everything just worked! Ethernet only needed to be plugged in and selected with a click. The Wifi also just worked. As did pulling several music files across the network and they began playing. The only trivial "did not work yet" was the on screen volume display. The T42 usually displays bars for the audio level in response to pressing the hardware control buttons. the buttons worked- just no display . That's a later project. Summary is- so far Xandros seems a viable XP replacement. -- Oren Beck 816.729.3645

Can we post a Link to Cedric Shock's Knoppix as "Rescue Tool" Tutorial- on the KCLUG page?

Ok- I have been giving prints of this truly incredible tutorial: http://www.shockfamily.net/cedric/knoppix/index32.html Along with the Knoppix cd for several years now. So far the # of not only "rescue success stories" but actual Linux new users from this project is really worth studying. Here's the overview of WHY. Last month my wife was ill so I was unable to run calls. One customer had a stupid employee "Virus&Crash" their primary WinXP box. Yeah- firing the kid sadly does not make the data accessible again. The hero of their day was not so much "me" for handing his son the Shockfamily link a year ago- but Mr Shock's project itself! Well, can we see about posting the link at minimum- if not a mirror with Permission formally requested of course. A few years ago -. I asked Cedric if he minded my "handout" of his project's screen prints and he at that time replied in email-"no problem." So I think he'd not object if formally asked. As for the Big Why? Well- I seem to have it working on my T42 laptop. Now I am back to working on that previous project for my mother. The new attack mode is now being explored from the remote session features of Xandros. Assistance with Repair to WD World Book Edition Drive

Unfortunately, after a reboot of the drive, I am no longer able to access the drive over the network. I discovered this is to corruption on the third partition on the disk. I may have a least restrictive alternative to full moderation-for the list at least.

Some of the list participants favor unfettered anarchy for the hell of it. Or Ethics? Other participants appear to be advocating "Robert's Rules of order" be applied. I propose accommodation of both worldviews. In a fashion that has worked for other forums. By having one list posting out as unfiltered and another as filtered/moderated. With archives of both incarnations kept on the site server for posterity. Life goes on unchanged for the existing list. Whoever we "agree " on execiting the proposal as final list comment "vote" determines would then ADD a setting to list preferences menus. One allowing the not yet defined "filtered/moderated" list output as an option. Here is the defining intent of this least restrictive alternative. To accomodate the divergent views of our participants in a fashion fair to all. In blunt english folks- If you want an anarchistic anything goes forum -do NOT let the Ordnuing! shrieks silence free speech. If you are a purist -demanding your Linux list be uncontaminated by non-topical posts? Step up to the plate and show your skills! create an instrumentality of code and human participation giving the purist audience such a feed. So our new horizon gives a choice between Anarchy or Whatever consensus decrees. It's not a perfect for all elements fix- but it makes a hell of a lot more sense than anything said so far. Reverse of Gmailfs needed.- something to make a local copy of everything from a Gmail account

Does anyone have a method for automatic backing up a Gmail account/s to my local drive? Several obvious reasons but none of them are worth detailing save the fact of it becoming a good idea.
