Open Office quirks

I've written my family tree in Open office. Some pages are title pages; centered text, single column. Some pages are family data pages; two column text. I have come across some strange behavior in OO, that I can't seem to get rid of. If I add a page and copy and paste data from another page, sometimes it adds an extra blank page. If I get rid of that page the new page with the pasted data becomes part of the previous existing page. A double ctrl-enter then adds a blank page and puts the new data on it's own page. If I then hit the delete once, then it appears to be fixed. But it's not really. If I save and close, the blank page comes back. Anyone else have issues like this with OO. I know this is probably something to post in a bug report. Also, any one but more than one textbox on a page? I'd like to have two textboxes on the data pages; one with two columns and one with one column. Brian Densmore

I should point out that there are a LOT of resources on alternative power on the web. Don't rely on this list unless your interest is purely casual.

VNCserver XDM on Startup?

I've done a few quick searches via Google but not finding what I'm looking for. I have Fedora Core 3 and would like to have VNCserver autoload on startup and give me a login screen when I attach remotely via SSH tunnel. Is this possible? I agree with you Brian, with one exception. Enlightenment is the best looking out of the box if you like it. I don't. Never have. I never saw the what the big deal was other than the transparent windows, which they seemed to be the first at. For me, one word always described E, yuck. I'm not a big theme hound, I switch them around every once in a while and end up back at default with just a change of wallpaper. Most of the time even that is covered up and so it's not a big deal for me. I go for functionality. To each his own, but KDE has always been fine for me on a full desktop and fluxbox or Windowmaker on a minimal machine. I even used XFCE for a while. Make it work first, then make it pretty. They can all be reconfigured to the point that their mama wouldn't recognize them, so take a chance, open up that GUI control panel and go wild. Brian Kelsay

cisco firewall pix 501 for vpn help need

Hi, All I emailed from my email server 192.168.1.3 earlier today, but I can't open my email from email server obviously at this time. So, I decided to email again about the one I previously emailed today. So that I can receive some respond. Here's the situation that I have. I set up windows 2003 server with web server. I have a Road Runner/Time Warner with a static ip address 67.53.24.194, subnet 255.255.255.252 and gateway 67.53.24.193, dns 24.94.165.25 and 24.94.165.34 I can access outside internet from this computer 192.168.1.3, not 192.168.1.5 which is my laptop. I have a cisco 900 /Zytel 900 series router first from outside and I attached this Cisco PIX 501 to the router and two computer is plugged in at the back of cisco PIX ethernet port directly. one is 192.168.1.3 and one 192.168.1.5 Interestingly, I can access internet outside world from 192.168.1.3, but not 192.168.1.5. and furthermore I can't access each machine either. sbc dsl and linksys firewall config issues

anyone done a setup with this? = scenario 1 = linksys to the dsl modem with the modem doing the ppoe auth. modem gets an IP from dsl linksys gets an IP from modem pc gets an IP linksys can not get from the pc to the Internet = scenario 2 = linksys to the dsl modem with the modem being a bridge linksys doing the ppoe auth. linksys ppoe auth works and linksys gets an IP from dsl pc gets an IP linksys browse most sites ok but seems to be slow to connect seems to be lower bandwidth some sites (hotmail/ebay) timeout same sites work if accessed as in scenario 1

Advises needed

Hi There, I am new to Fedora Linux and have just installed and get in running. Have a couple of questions and would like to seek your advise... 1. I am using GNOME and wondering when I download program like Real Player, how do I install the program like what we did in Windows where the icons will appeared in desktop and in the Start menu? 2. Is there something in GNOME or in Linux like uninstall once we no longer required that program? 3. What's the different between RPM and Package? 4. Does anyone encounter 'hang' when you try to update the patches from redhat?

OT: State of the IT market in KC?

I know there were a number of IT people on the list who have in the not too distant past been looking for IT jobs. As I am likely to be in the looking for a job market soon, I thought I'd ask what the current market is shaping up as. I'm more interested in how the local programming market is. What types of jobs are available, qualifications, etc. Any Linux related programming jobs? It would be interesting to see those. Brian Densmore
