Recommends for a Linux laptop- preferably an abuse resistant model.

I do not need the full milspec explosion/waterproof models.. Just hopefully minor drop and knocked over drink resistance to protect my $500 ballpark investment. Much as I have been looking at CF-51 etc semirugged or the harder cased CF-71 family variants the $ to hardness trade offs seem dicey. As in perhaps I just should get a $399 low end from somewhere new and get the no quibbles even broken screen warranty . My average use profile is web browsing, light commercial use of OpenOffice and some music playing. I do not need shooter game frame rates etc. Battery life and stability are more important to me as examples. Beryl would be nice but not essential as a target max demand application. DVD/CD burner is a minimum optical drive. Within that overview recommends will be appreciated SO folks, if you were going to spend $500 on a new or Ebay sourced laptop what would it be?

It's Hackerbot, and 3ricj says people react kindly to the little bot, not like they do to the evil hacker stereotype. Or a CDMA device sent up in a balloon that works until the batteries fail. This is what happens when hackers have a space - Hackerspace, in Seattle. Founded on April Fool's 2005, it's full of things that explode, burn, whirr and hum, and people who play with them. "It takes money to do this, but you've got a bigger pool of people to raise money," 3ricj says. With an evolving group of members, people try art, hardware hacks and collective projects in the 3,000 square foot space. Members have lots of freedom inside, but they also think through the results of what they do. "It's important you don't disrupt the local ecosystem because once the cops start showing up your project is in trouble," 3ricj says. "Sharing a case of beer and sitting in a corner isn't really a good use for the space." They've got dozens of projects underway, a pile of electronics finally sorted for easy use. They use wikis to track supplies, keep project lists and notes. Hackerspace is a real example of hacker gatherings, infrastructure in the community that the Hacker Foundation is promoting. "You have to organize," says Nick Farr, who set up 'hackers on a plane', hauling hackers from DefCon to Germany for a hacker camp. "All it takes is getting a group of people who are local and interested and start talking about it, get to a shared vision." "It gets really hard to pursue projects in a house, it's important to have a space you can invite people into," he says. NYC Resistor is creating a space in Manhattan, another group is working on an art gallery/hacker space in San Francisco, possibly the two most expensive cities in North America. "Almost any potentially public space that you can build walls and lay network cable in can be a hacker space," Farr says. "Look at any public space in your community where you can start to create a hacker space." Almost all the public hacker spaces created have failed because the people who started the project burned out from the drama of it all. And there's the risk of surprise expenses - holes punched or insurance costs. "Noboby's going to do the community organizing for you," says Farr. "We're encouraging you to do this because it's a cool idea for people to have a place to collaborate." Some of the things that come from hackerspaces are fascinating - Lara Sobel's RFID shielding pouches wallets, made from trash and essentially an open source project. "I posted instructions for making them online so anyone can do it," Sobel says. "I learned how to fuse the trash bags and defeat RFID readers from available information and I'm sharing how to do it." Besides fused trashbags, Lara uses aluminum can bits to provide shielding whether the pouch is open or closed. They Velcro shut and fit credit cards, licenses and passports. Sobel started making them because she wanted to be able to turn her RFID technology on herself to people she trusts. ITEC Software distribution (Again)

I thought I might revive this thread to mention that Fedora 8 is scheduled to be released on November 8th, the second day of ITEC. If you're still looking for software to hand out, Fedora 8 will be freshly 'released' that morning at 9AM central time. If you brought a laptop and a spindle of DVD-Rs, you'd have a chance to start burning as the doors open (assuming they have a big connection there). On 9/28/07, Monty J. Hi KCLUG, I'm Michael Schultheiss, President of the Central Indiana Linux Users Group. Kim Brand, Secretary of CINLUG, is going to be speaking at the ITEC conference in Overland Park on November 7-8. He wanted me to reach out to KCLUG and see if you wanted to participate in ITEC. CINLUG has had a booth at the Indianapolis ITEC for the past two years and we've been able to get a lot of new people aware of our LUG. I'm new to Kansas City. I've moved here from Gallatin, (wast there 1 yr), and before that I was in Utah (going to school). Generally the local LUG is a great place to get info on local IT stuff. (duh). I have time Warner, has anyone been able to run a webserver using them or is there another company DSL/Cable that is cheaper/better. -- ~ Mark Gardner ~ I worked for Novell while in Utah so I'm a fan of SUSE (in case anyone was wondering). But I respect all distros for their strengths.

Upgrade to Ubuntu 7.10 or wait a bit?

My system updater is bugging me to upgrade to Ubuntu 7.10. I'm interested in all the KCLUG "early adopters" experiences and whether anyone has experienced any problems with upgrading to 7.10. I generally prefer the newer versions of Ubuntu and rarely have had any problems with new versions, but a lifetime of using Microsoft products has left me with a feeling of dread about any new version of software. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
