Request for help: Debian firewall, and maybe some kernel upgrade tips

I need some firewall help, for starters. At present, all I need open is SSH, WWW, and FTP. I tried this: http://www.rexx.com/~dkuhlman/iptables_install.html but I'm installing on 3.0r1 with 2.2 kernel and got several error messages regarding incompatible kernel when I tried to start the firewall. I'd like to upgrade to a newer kernel, but can't seem to find any help on how to do this easily using apt-get. I think if I'm using 2.4 or 2.6 my problem with the firewall will go away. I do not have physical access to the box I'm working on, so need to be able to do all of this without physical intervention, or even the risk of it. What's the safest way to upgrade a Debian kernel? Also. Is there any sort of firewall that is real easy to configure, something like this: [SuperEasyFirewall] Open=22,80,23 Blocked=22.23.34.43:[22,80] Closed=EverythingElse I don't understand why a firewall config has to be four miles long and so dern complicated! -Jared

Yeah I know all the *Evil Sun* issues. Blah, blah, blah. Anyway from what I understand the "free JREs" don't necessarily work well with OO. Some of the features aren't working yet. Eventually someone will come up with a 100% "free" JRE, but until that happens you're best bet is to install Sun's JRE for OO. Personally, I don't care too much about the battle over Sun's JRE, but would use an alternate if it was stable enough. The point of the original post was about porting users to Linux. WAP Distro

There was some discussion of a Linux distro that was targeted at being a WAP gateway. I'm not quite completely set up here in England yet, and don't have a search function for the list, could someone remind me of the name of that packate?

Migrating to Linux - WP

I was reading about yet another LTSP project the other day, and idly thinking about making the next upgrade at the law office a move to LTSP, when I was brought up short by recalling that they all run Windows, however comfortable I've become in KDE. There are going to be a couple of major showstoppers if I try to convert someone there to Linux. One is a special propietary sort of word processing package that handles Court Reporter Transcripts, but I think it might run under Wine. The big problem is that several courts require documents to be submitted in Word Perfect format, and last I checked OpenOffice was not even inporting WP, let alone saving a workable output. I seem to remember that in order to run WP under Linux, Corell had some sort of full Windows emulation set up, where you had to install Linux, Windows, Wine, WP, and maybe something else. Has anybody worked with WP on a linux platform? How much of a pain is it? Does it require a state-of-the-art workstation to handle all the emulation load or will it run on a minimal LTSP setup? (I remember when WP ran on a dedicated machine the size of an office desk with return. It's never really been happy unless it could have the whole computer to itself.)

On the other hand, it sounds like it might work better than a WINE solution. There is a third possiblity, but reading the FAQ it sounds heavily problematic: WordPerfect on Linux natively. Its now unsupported, but neither is WINE. Well H E Double Hockey Sticks! It's about time! ;') I've also heard that there is and has been a Linux native version of WP for some time. I haven't used it in a while. I have an older registered and commercial version around somewhere. I found it worked ok. Don't remember if I had any complaints or speed issues, it's been that many years.
