I have a PII-300Mhz I purchased for about $240 six months ago. The 500Mhz laptops at HyperTech computers (87th & Farley) are right between $300-$400. 300Mhz is decent enough for most things, not very good for video (VideoCD-quality MPEG1 videos run fairly well) but it will let me do basic graphics editing and browse on the Internet without painful "chuggachuggachugga" waits for the swap. It's interesting to see the competition between how large a gmail account you can have. I delete all I can, trying to keep my mailbox(es) as trim as possible. About once a month I take time to delete everything I possibly can, keeping only items which still need a response somehow. My inbox currently has 53 items in it, my archive maybe 300 total, and that's only because I haven't had time to trim it more. I think it's because I learned email on a VMS/VAX with limited quotas. It also helps to reduce evidence that I'm completely barmy, which email seems to reveal more than other writing. -Jared

You may be able to find a 100-300MHz on ebay for around a hundred. I actually have a working 120MHz w/ 32MB that I would let go for $100. It has a good screen (no bad pixels that I recall), great speakers, I'll throw a 2GB drive in and a 3COM NIC. Only problem will be getting the sound chip working. It's a Yamaha OPL3-Sax. There is a driver, but it takes some work to get it going. The Ecasound project someone else did with a USB-controlled radio, used the date function in just the same way your script does it. I'll have to add that one in to the command, then figure out this "at" thingy. Incidentally, what is the command for viewing the list of "at" jobs pending? Obviously in cron you've already created a list using crontab which you can view with crontab as well, but I have never used the "at" command and don't know how it works. It does sound like "at" is the thing to use for these occasional recordings. Hmmm... this is disturbing a function that does something when the software is not installed rather than complain that the software isn't installed. This sounds like a flaw to me. Should send a comment/bug report to the Debian Reiserfs pkg maintainers about a lack of dependency. Unless of course mkfs is able to make/format many filesystem types, whether installed or not. If you try to use jfs or xfs, please check that the tools for that filesystem are installed before hitting the panic button. ;-) 42.
